The purpose of the Trust shall be to provide for the preservation and creation of affordable housing in the Town of Harwich for the benefit of low and moderate income households as defined by the Massachusetts Department of Housing and Community Development, or successor agency (“DHCD”) and in furtherance of this purpose, to acquire by gift, purchase, or otherwise real estate and personal property, both tangible and intangible, of every sort and description, and to use and/or dispose of such property, both real and personal, in such manner as the Board of Trustees deems appropriate to carry out such purpose. The Trust shall be governed in accordance with Act and the authority granted by Town Meeting, as the same may be amended from time to time.
Harwich rental assistance program
In October of 2024 the Harwich Affordable Housing Trust selected Homeless Prevention Council, through the Request for Proposal (RFP) process to manage and run their Rental Assistance Program. The final details are being worked on and this program will be available to residents, people who work in Harwich, and households with children in Harwich schools shortly. In Spring of 2024 the Harwich Affordable Housing Trust (Trust) released an Request for Proposal (RFP) for the development of Trust owned land into Affordable Housing units. Bid openings were in early June. Through the RFP selection process, the development team selected was Pennrose. The Affordable Housing Trust and Pennrose are currently in the negotiation phase. Pennrose proposed a 60 unit, 90 bedroom development with all units being income and rent restricted ranging from 30% and 100% AMI. Please stay connected for updates on this project.
In December of 2023, the Harwich Fire Association was granted funds from the Affordable Housing Trust to help complete their conversion of the old Fire Housing to a mixed use building for events with three Affordable apartments above. Stay tuned for updates on completion dates in the Winter/Spring of 2025.
In September of 2024, local developer John Carey was granted funds from the Affordable Housing Trust for the conversion of the old West Harwich School House into housing. There will be 10 rental units, of which three are Affordable. Stay tuned for updates on completion in the Spring/Summer of 2025.
